På svenska: Östersund (uttal ) (sydsamiska: Staare) är en tätort som är centralort i Östersunds kommun och residensstad i Jämtlands län. I tätorten ingår delar av de två kommunerna Östersunds och Krokoms kommun. Östersund ligger vid Storsjön och är Storsjöbygdens, Jämtlands läns och landskaps enda stad. Östersund är Sveriges 22:a största tätort (och fjärde störst i Norrland efter Umeå, Gävle och Sundsvall) med 52 797 invånare 2020. Östersund är den enda stad inom Sveriges nuvarande gränser som grundats på 1700-talet. Staden grundades 1786 av Gustav III som ville utöka sitt inflytande över handeln i Jämtland, vars invånare bedrev en omfattande och mycket lönsam handel som den svenska staten ville kunna kontrollera. Statsmaktens intentioner var att, i enlighet med lagen, kanalisera handeln till staden. Detta togs dock inte väl emot av befolkningen, vilket ledde till att Östersund länge förblev en liten stad, befolkningsmässigt sett faktiskt mindre än antalet invånare på den intilliggande Frösön. Det dröjde ända till senare delen av 1800-talet innan Östersund blev en verklig stad, egentligen först efter järnvägens ankomst 1879.Östersund är geografiskt sett beläget i mellersta Sveriges bergstrakter, mitt i Jämtlands län. I egenskap av en av Sveriges ytgeografiskt sett mest centralt belägna städer brukar Östersund ta åt sig äran som Sveriges mittpunkt. Ortnamnet kommer från det ner mot 150 meter smala sundet Östersundet, ursprungligen "Östra sundet", som skiljer ön Frösön från fastlandet.Staden marknadsfördes 1997–2017 av kommunen och näringslivet som "Vinterstaden". Vintersporter har långa anor i staden och Östersund har genom åren anordnat flera världsmästerskap i vintersporter som skidskytte, skidorientering och skridskolöpning samt svenska mästerskap i skidlöpning och skotercross. I Östersund finns även Nationellt Vintersportcentrum och staden har tre gånger tillsammans med Åre ansökt om att få anordna de olympiska vinterspelen, men utan att få uppdraget. Föregångaren till vinter-OS, de nordiska spelen, förlades emellertid ibland till Östersund på grund av snöbrist i Stockholm i början av 1900-talet.Östersund kom att bli globalt uppmärksammat även i fotboll, när Östersunds FK säsongen 2017/18 blev Sveriges första klubb att nå slutspel i Uefa Europa League; detta efter att också ha blivit Norrlands första/enda mästare i Svenska cupen för herrar, och likt de litterära Åshöjden-berättelserna inom kort avancerade till elitnivå från lägre divisioner och lyfte ortens näringsliv. Tidigare stora fotbollsmeriter är IFK Östersunds titel i Norrländska mästerskapet 1949 och Ope IF:s damers SM-silver 1976. In English: Östersund (pronounced [œstɛˈʂɵnːd] ; Southern Sami: Staare) is an urban area (city) in Jämtland in the middle of Sweden. It is the seat of Östersund Municipality and the capital of Jämtland County. Östersund is located at the shores of Sweden's fifth-largest lake, Storsjön, opposite the island Frösön. It is the only city in Jämtland. The northern part of the urban area is located inside of the municipality of Krokom. Östersund is the region's cultural and economical centre and by tradition a city of trade and commerce. The city had one of the most extensive garrisons in Sweden prior to its closure in the early-21st century. Östersund is home to Mid Sweden University's largest campus site with approximately 7,000 students. With a total population of 50,960 (2017) Östersund is the 22nd most populous city in Sweden, the 46th most populous city in Scandinavia, and by far the largest inland city in Northern Sweden. The city was the only Swedish city founded and chartered in the 18th century. Östersund was founded in order to create a trade monopoly over Jämtland whose inhabitants' lucrative trade annoyed the Swedish Crown. The intention was to persuade the local farmers to deliver merchandise to middlemen in Östersund, but the population opposed this economic philosophy, and Östersund long remained small. It took until the end of the 19th century for Östersund to truly become a city, after the arrival of the railroad and the economic liberalization of that time. Östersund is situated in inland Scandinavia and connected to Sundsvall in the east on the Swedish coast, and Trondheim in the west at the shores of the Norwegian Sea. Östersund is located in the middle of Scandinavia, in the middle of Sweden, in the middle of Jämtland County and in the middle of Östersund Municipality. As the most centrally located city in Sweden, the city credits itself as the centre of Sweden.Östersund is marketed as Vinterstaden – Winter City. Winter City as a project is run by the municipality together with city enterprises. While winters are long, the local climate is only moderately cold by elevated and northerly Swedish standards, but with chilly summers. Östersund has had a long history as a centre of outdoor activities with a modern cross-country ski stadium and an actual piste in the city itself. Östersund has also hosted several World Championships in various sports such as biathlon, speed skating and ski orienteering along with Swedish National Championships in cross-country skiing and snocross. The city has been the applicant city of Sweden for several Winter Olympic Games, but has yet to host one.
