Information about the research and the division Onsala Space Observatory is looking for a motivated and creative postdoctoral researcher to pursue progressive research in astrochemistry in collaboration with associate professor Eva Wirström. The position has an initial assignment of two years with potential for an additional year, ample funding for dissemination and possibilities for collaborations both within the astronomy research community at Chalmers, Chalmers Initiative on Cosmic Origins (CICO), as well as other international collaborators.
As the successful candidate you will be expected to pursue research focused on your chosen aspect of astrochemistry during star and planet formation, in collaboration with prof. Wirström's group. Research questions of particular interest in the group are the water trail from cold dark clouds to planetary systems, complex organic molecules, isotopic fractionation as a tracer of astrochemical history, and nuclear spin effects. For a successful application, your research plan should clearly demonstrate its contribution to, and/or synergies with, one or several of these questions. Also describe how you envision your proposed research will benefit from the collaboration. The proposed research could be either observational or theoretical, or a combination of both.
As a postdoc you will belong to the Onsala Space Observatory Division of the Department of Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) at Chalmers. Onsala Space Observatory is the Swedish national facility for Radio Astronomy, hosting e.g. the Nordic ALMA Regional Centre. Astronomy and astrophysics research is hosted within two divisions at SEE: Onsala Space Observatory and Astronomy and Plasma Physics. Our members work in close connection and research covers a wide range of topics including astrochemistry, the birth and death of stars, exoplanets, formation and evolution of galaxies and the solar system. The research spans theoretical and computational studies, observational programmes and instrumentation development for ground and space based observatories.
Physically, we are situated both at the observatory in Onsala south of Gothenburg and at the main Johanneberg campus in Gothenburg.
Major responsibilities Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to pursue research in line with the proposed project in collaboration with the group, publish and present scientific articles and actively take part in the academic activities at SEE. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
The position also includes opportunities for small fractions of time dedicated to astronomy outreach as well as supervising undergraduate, Master's and/or PhD students. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry or the public sector.
Qualifications To qualify for this postdoc position you must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date of the position, for example astronomy, physics, chemistry with astronomy applications or similar.
Good verbal and written communication skills in English are required. Experience of working as part of a team is considered an asset.
Contract terms Full-time temporary employment. The position has an initial assignment of two years with potential for an additional year.
We offer Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
Chalmers aims to actively improve our gender balance. We work broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
Application procedure The application should be marked with Ref 20210529 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:
• Cover Letter, 1 page • CV, including complete list of publications • Statement of past and current research (max 2 pages) • Research plan (max 2 pages) • One letter of recommendation and contact details of two additional professional references who can be contacted for verbal references.
Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The files may be compressed (zipped).
Application deadline: 16 February, 2022
For questions, please contact: Associate Professor Eva Wirström, Onsala Space Observatory E-mail: eva.wirstrom@chalmers.se Phone: +46 31 7725520, +46 70 9492363
