Presentation:

Join a team of leading-edge researchers in Software Engineering group with specialization of Software Engineering for AI systems. This is an opportunity for you to gain a special knowledge in software engineering methods for building software system and software-intensive systems with AI components, in cooperation with leading Swedish companies.

Information about the field of research
This position concerns research that addresses the challenges of development of AI-enabled systems (i.e. systems that includes AI-based functions). The current trend today is to integrate AI functionality into complex systems, making AI functions as architectural components of these systems. In engineering of AI-enabled systems new challenges appear related to the AI components themselves and to development of AI-enabled systems that contain these components. For example, how do we efficiently build AI-enabled systems, when we cannot predict efficiency of ML training phase? Or, for a required system reliability, what quality of ML components is required? Or, how do we manage continuous change of software with a process of changes of ML components? Our research will focus on (i) providing a new development process that integrates the Machine Learning (ML) and software development processes, (ii) building component models for AI components that expose the information specific to AI components, such as the datasets used or the accuracy, and (iii), by analyzing system consistency using component and system properties and triggering information exchange between the software and ML development process, and providing a seamless continuous evolution of the software system.

Major responsibilities
Your main responsibility is to conduct a research in the field of AI Engineering. We conduct our research in a tight cooperation with industry, mostly via Software Center. Software Center has a number of cooperating industrial partners, that makes it possible to involve them in the research process. Software Center has also an “AI engineering” group with 5-6 PhD students who work in the same research field. You will be a member of that group. You are expected to work on specific topics and cooperate with the group members. That might include helping in student supervision. The group has also other activities like being active in conference organization, giving seminars, and similar. You will also be able to expand your international network.
The research part includes 80% of the full time, while 20% of time is usually dedicated to faculty duties, typically helping in teaching.

Qualifications
You have a PhD degree in a field related to Software Engineering or AI. The degree should generally not be older than three years. You are highly motivated, self-propelled, energetic, independent and with a well-developed analytical problem-solving ability. As a person, you are empathetic, loyal and have high ethical standards. Your communication skills in English (literal as well as oral) have to be very good.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Swedish is not a requirement, but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
