Presentation:

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on machine learning driven metallo-protein biophysics. You will develop new methods to detect metal-binding sites in proteins and to predict impact of protein variation on metal-binding in proteins. The developed methods will feed directly into on-going research on roles of metallo-proteins in human health and disease in the protein-biophysics group and complement on-going research activities in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences (AIMLeNS) group. The research takes place at Chalmers University of Technology and is a collaboration between PI:s in two departments.

Information about the research
Machine learning provides new exciting opportunities in the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology. Its potential application areas span from designing new drugs against multi-resistant pathogens and understanding the impact of gene defects on a protein's function to speeding up computer simulations to understand fundamental scientific phenomena and design optimal algorithms for near-term quantum computers. The path towards these applications can leverage the power of deep learning to represent and process high-dimensional data in an effective manner and encode natural laws and symmetries.

The AIMLeNS group (head: Simon Olsson) at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary group focusing on problems in the natural sciences and the development of machine learning and AI systems towards these problems. In collaboration with the protein biophysics group (head: Pernilla Wittung-Stafshede) at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering, we are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to mainly be placed in the AIMLeNS group.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to lead research projects in collaboration with the project PIs. You will also have the opportunity to mentor and co-supervise junior researchers. The research entails developing and implementing scientific ideas, establishing research collaborations, communicating your results orally or in written form via scientific venues, including in journals and at conferences.

Qualifications
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher, you must hold a doctoral degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or an equivalent degree with machine learning experience. It is meritorious to have prior research experience within protein-bioinformatics, natural language processing, and/or protein biophysics. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English, excellent time management, and an aptitude for project leadership. Due to the interdisciplinary shape of this project, we are looking for a person that enjoys solving complex problems in collaboration with others.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
