Hereby advertises a position as Associate professor in Ethology
Duties We are looking for a researcher with relevant expertise in ethology, cognition and animal psychology to further develop the department's profile in these and related subject areas. We are looking for a relatively established researcher with experience of working with several different research fields to illuminate behavior and evolutionary events, both from a basic and applied perspective. The candidate we are looking for must have a great interest in developing both research and teaching in basic and applied ethology, cognition and animal welfare. Teaching will be in Swedish and English.
The duties assigned to teaching staff may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.
As associate professor you are expected to initiate, lead, and conduct independent research within the field in line with the division’s activity and directions, particularly in the area of biology that relates to ethology and animal psychology. As associate professor you are also expected to supervise Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, to teach and develop courses at all levels within integrated circuits and systems, to be active in enabling utilization of research results, and to contribute in the division’s and department’s research education.
Grounds for assessment As grounds for assessment when appointing an associate professor, the level of proficiency required to qualify for the appointment shall apply. The examination of the pedagogical skill shall be given as much care as the examination of the scientific skill. For this employment, special emphasis will be placed primarily on scientific skills, secondly on pedagogical skills, and thirdly on other skills that are considered equivalent among themselves.
Scientific skill is demonstrated through own research that has resulted in scientific publication, through planning and management of research and postgraduate education and through the ability to receive research grants. In addition, scientific skill can be demonstrated through the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration with other researchers and through the ability to inform about research.
For this employment, a docent qualification or equivalent in ethology, behavioral ecology, animal psychology or equivalent areas is required. Furthermore, the applicant must have good research qualifications in the subject for the employment, documented by publications in reputable journals to an extent that at least corresponds to the associate professor level. The applicant must also have experience of supervising doctoral students.
The research at IFM is largely externally funded. The ability to attract external research funds is therefore crucial to be able to conduct successful research and thus a particularly important merit basis for appointment. Documented experience of scientific collaboration across subject boundaries, and of external collaboration (for example with authorities or companies), is also a merit, as is a national and international network of research collaboration established for example during postdoctoral research.
Teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to convey relevant knowledge and skills, to stimulate students such that they drive their own learning process, to create engagement and interest in the subject area, and the ability to structure and organise both the content and forms of work in relation to the goals of the subject area. In addition, the teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to contribute to the development and renewal of education and the ability to reflect on their own attitude to education and the results of their work.
The applicant must have good experience of teaching, both designing and being responsible for courses in relevant subjects, e.g. ethology, behavioral ecology, cognition or learning theory at the undergraduate or advanced level. Documentation of good teaching assessments, course evaluations, etc. is particularly meritorious. Documented experience of designing and developing new courses and training elements is also an advantage. Administrative skills and leadership is demonstrated through the ability to plan, organize and develop operations and personnel.
Experience of administrative work in connection with research and teaching is an advantage, for example in the form of departmental leadership, group leadership, education administration, etc. Furthermore, it is merited with documented efforts for collaboration with the surrounding society ("the third task"). Collaboration with society is an integral part of the research and educational mission of the higher education institution, where the ability to use collaboration with society to raise the quality of the education and research, its relevance, dissemination, accessibility and application may constitute grounds for assessment.
Collaboration within research is demonstrated by the ability to disseminate, make accessible and benefit from research through the production and dissemination of popular scientific material, collaborative projects with external non-academic actors, commissioned consulting as expert, mobility projects, commercialisation, and activities undertaken within the framework of permitted secondary employment. It is desirable that the successful candidate with another mother tongue than Swedish should be able to teach in Swedish within two years from being appointed. The applicant must be fluent in English.
